Children, The

year: 1984
director: Marguerite Duras
cast: Axel Bougousslavski, Daniel Gelin, Andre Dussolier, Pierre Arditi

With co-directors Jean-Marc Turine and Jean Mascolo, Marguerite Duras adapted her children's book, Ah Ernesto, into what Jonathan Rosenbaum described as a ''judicious encounter of Dennis the Menace with Straub, Eraserhead with Huillet.'' In other words, babyish, bizarre, and Brechtian. Forty-year-old actor Axel Bogousslavsky plays seven-year-old Ernesto, who leaves school because knowledge means nothing in a meaningless world. Cinematography by Bruno Nuytten (Jean de Florette). Winner of three awards at the 1985 Berlin Film Festival..
