JOURNEY TO PORTUGAL

year: 2011
director: Sergio Trefaut
cast: Maria de Medeiros, Isabel Ruth, Makena Diop

Journey to Portugal is a politically engaged film, based on a true story, about European procedures at airport border control and the inhuman treatment that has become totally accepted nowadays. Maria, a Ukrainian doctor, comes to Portugal to join her husband who is also a doctor. Upon arrival at Faro airport she is the only person from Kiev approached by agents of Immigration and Customs, and they lead her to a room of interrogation, without any explanations. All this occurs because the authorities suspect that something illegal must be behind her trip, since she is from Eastern Europe and her husband is Senegalese. Journey to Portugal throws light on a tiny tip of the iceberg: the fact that the police practices are consigned to the silence of statistics. There is a total lack of transparency regarding police procedures in very many situations. In Portugal, civil society has no way of knowing what really happens in the majority of cases the police handle.
